Today Tony Baldry welcomed the announcement of a long-term funding agreement for the new Canal & River Trust, which will replace British Waterways in England and Wales later this year.

Today, Tony Baldry welcomed the announcement of a long-term funding agreement for the new Canal & River Trust, which will replace British Waterways in England and Wales later this year.

Tony Baldry said, “I think that the Canal & River Trust, which effectively is akin to a National Trust for water, will hopefully be much more responsive to the needs of waterway users.

“The Oxford Canal is an important amenity for many of my constituents, whether they be boaters, canoeists, walkers or cyclists. I hope that the new Trust will be able to better involve the energy and views of those who use the Oxford Canal which has seen a steady increase in recent years and with a proposal for a new marina to be built near to Banbury and as we see every year with the very successful Banbury Canal Day, its use its likely to continue to increase.”

Following the Government's HS2 annoucement, North Oxfordshire MP Tony Baldry has sent a letter to the Secretary of State for Transport regarding compensation.

Following the Government’s HS2 annoucement, North Oxfordshire MP Tony Baldry has sent a letter to the Secretary of State for Transport regarding compensation.

The full text of the letter is below:

Rt. Hon. Justine Greening, MP
Secretary of State
Department for Transport

12 January 2012

HS2 Compensation

I understand that in due course you, your Department and HS2 are going to be bringing forward details of a proposed compensation scheme on which you intend to consult.

Can I suggest there may be some benefit in there being the opportunity of having a pre-publication meeting, i.e. a meeting with Members of Parliament and representatives, if appropriate, of Local Authorities and Community Groups, on a totally “without prejudice” basis, before the Department produces a consultation document. I think that would be provide a helpful opportunity for colleagues to explain what they hope a compensation scheme might look like, to raise any concerns they may have had about the operation of the Exceptional Hardship Scheme as any further scheme is likely to be an Exceptional Hardship Scheme +, and if the EHS has had problems, then I think you and officials need to understand what those concerns might be.

I also think it is helpful if everyone feels that so far as is possible they are involved in trying to get the right answers to compensation, whilst of course recognising that whatever scheme is put up for compensation will of course be the scheme proposed by your Department.

Tony Baldry

The Labour Party is now proposing a route for HS2 that would take the High Speed Rail link very close to both Banbury and Bicester.

Tony Baldry said: “Under the Labour Party’s proposal, HS2 would emerge into the Chilterns from a long deep tunnel. But the ludicrous nature of the proposed route becomes apparent in relation to Bicester and Banbury. These are two of the fastest growing towns in England, with the Chiltern railway line running straight through both of them. I am not entirely sure whether the Labour Party are suggesting their proposed HS2 route runs straight through the centre of these two towns, or whether they think there is spare land between the motorway and Banbury and Bicester but either way the suggestion is quite simply undeliverable.

“This is a route that is impractical but if the Labour Party really is serious in putting forward the proposal of HS2 running alongside Banbury and Bicester, I would very much welcome the Shadow Transport Secretary to my constituency so I can walk the route with her and show her just how impractical the proposal is.”
