Churches doubling as local community centres

20 October 2015

SIR – Your report fails to highlight the role of churches at the heart of communities. They provide numerous services, from play groups and day care to lunch clubs for the elderly and support for the vulnerable. In some rural areas, the church may be the only public building still open.

Most of the Church of England’s churches are listed, and funds for repair and maintenance rely overwhelmingly on the generosity of congregations.

The report of the Church Buildings Review Group seeks to ensure that our church buildings are a blessing, not a burden, and to promote imaginative work already under way to adapt them for community use while retaining their ability to host Christian worship.
